You know, I LOVE DOSA too lol and now that I think about it, Dosa basically follows the same formula, seasoned potato filling surrounded by a flour - though of course in the dosa's case, it's "wrapped" in crepe and opposed to "encased" in the flour like oyaki and knish. But I strongly bet you could swap the seasoned potato filling from all three - dosa, knish and oyaki -interchangeably into the center of any one of them and they would all still taste amazing.
I've never had a knish. Can you even believe that? But I have had Oyaki. Can I please just have a bagel instead????? Dominos - laughing! Thank you for this. I'm reading it at 11 pm and now have cravings for knish, oyaki, pizza, bagels and Bad Bunny.
My favorite comfort food are tortillas. Not the thin ones. these are about half of an inch thick. My mom didn't make them. A woman at my school had a kitchen where she made them. They were deep fried. They only cost about a quarter at the time. They were a snack/lunch food in Middle School.
I learned to make them as an adult, by trial and error.
You need a half a cup of fine yellow corn meal, a sprinkle of course meal and a pinch of salt(to taste) and hot water. Also have a hot frying pan on with a moderate amount of vegetable oil.
Mix together then slowly poor in some hot water. Enough to make a paste. Make a ball with the paste to fit in the middle of your palm. Press into a small circle(like a pan cake) and put into hot oil. Fry until toasted on both sides. Eat by itself or with other foods for any meal. Good with butter and or cheese. They remind me of home. 😋 Enjoy!
Now that I think about it, you're right, I definitely prefer the thick corn tortillas. I have never tried to make them from scratch, but I will definitely give it a try. I immediately wanted a tortilla after reading your comment - so much so that I'm going to pick up some corn meal at the grocery store today. I will let you know how they come out! Thank you!
Chihiro, I made oyaki once during the pandemic (cause I was baking and cooking up a storm during the pandemic!) and they came out just okay. The dough was a bit too thick and the kabocaha filling a little too sweet but we ate them :-) I haven't made them since because they're so easy to buy here, but I think I might try again. Do you have a favorite flavor?
I didn't have time to watch it, but I am planning to watch it during my after-dinner computer viewing time. LOL, maybe being full when I watch them will be good! THANKS!
Oh my gosh, I love everything about this post! I need to go back reread, watch, and then get a knish ASAP. I love that your mom used to pack them for your lunch! Thank you for this culinary delight via your way with words.
Also you know what my favorite comfort food is - D O S A
